Prometheus’s Fire

In the ancient myth, humanity enters the world strangely unfinished. While other creatures are given strength, speed, feather, claw, instinct and concealment, man remains naked, vulnerable, and unequipped. Prometheus ascends to the gods and steals divine fire, placing into mortal hands the first technology through which we could transcend the limitations of the body and begin altering the conditions of our own existence.

Fire illuminated the darkness, warmed the body, transformed food and matter, and opened possibilities of human existence that biology alone could never provide. It was also inherently dangerous. To receive the gift was therefore only the beginning. We had to learn to understand it, contain it, stoke it, wield it and, ultimately, steward its power, lest the very force that sustained us consume us.

We have been repeating the cycle ever since. We learned to harness the electromagnetic field and remade the world in its current. We split the atom and entered another order of human power. Again and again, forces once beyond our command have become instruments in human hands, enlarging the reach of what we can illuminate, communicate, heal, create and destroy. Each new technology enlarges human possibility. It also enlarges human consequence.

AI brings the ancient paradox into startling proximity once again, extending our technological reach into language, knowledge, memory, imagination and creation. The question is not whether the fire itself is good or evil. Fire was never so simple. The deeper question is whether the wisdom with which we steward our technologies can mature alongside the power they place within our reach.
